FIRE tracking for lazy people.
I like knowing where I stand financially. I don't like budgeting. I don't want to record every coffee, Grab ride, lunch, subscription and grocery bill just to know whether I'm spending too much. And I definitely don't want to spend an hour every month maintaining a spreadsheet.
So I built something simpler. Just check in once a month.
Enter:
- Your income
- How much you invested
- Your bank balances
- Your portfolio balances
That's it.
Napkin FIRE uses the change in your cash balances to estimate your spending, then shows you the things that actually matter:
- How much am I worth?
- How much am I spending?
- How much am I investing?
- What's my FIRE number?
- How close am I?
No need to track every dollar. No need to categorize every expense. No need to be perfectly accurate.
It's quick and dirty financial tracking — accurate enough to make better decisions without turning your life into a budgeting exercise. Because personal finance shouldn't become another chore.
You don't need to know that you spent $14.70 on lunch. You need to know whether you're moving in the right direction.
- Am I getting richer?
- Am I investing enough?
- Is my spending under control?
- Am I getting closer to freedom?
That's what Napkin FIRE is for. Not accounting. Not budgeting. Just a monthly snapshot of your journey to financial independence.
Spend 5 minutes checking in. Then get on with your life.

Your Monthly Report
Latest completed month appears first, with earlier months extending to the right.
Implied spending starts on the third completed month. The first completed month is a snapshot. The first two completed months are gated and do not set the FIRE number.

Years to FIRE
Down is good. If years fall by more than the calendar months that passed, you beat a 10% wait with no new money.
The other clock (keep investing) is in the headline, not this line.

Definitions & Methodology
Liquid Assets for FIRE
The bank accounts and portfolios marked as Liquid Asset for FIRE.
FIRE Number
25× buffered annual spending, based on a fixed 4% withdrawal rate.
Implied Spending
Opening cash + salary + recurring and one-time inflows − Amount Invested − closing cash. Never below 0. The first completed month is a snapshot. The first two completed months are gated on reports and do not set the FIRE number.
A $0 implied month
Usually means cash became investments (for example a bonus invested the next month). The report still shows 0. That month is skipped when averaging spend for the FIRE number, so a lump invest cannot print “Reached FIRE.”
Spending & investing average
One setting, N months. FIRE number uses the last N positive implied-spend months. Keep-investing uses the last N Amount Invested months after month 1, and $0 invest months count as 0.
Years to FIRE: Stop Adding
How long today's Liquid Assets for FIRE would take to reach today's FIRE Number at 10%, with no further contributions. This is the official clock and the Years to FIRE chart.
Years to FIRE: Keep Investing
Same FIRE number, plus the recent average Amount Invested every year. Shown in the headline only.
10% Sit-and-Wait Path
The benchmark for monthly progress: previous FIRE assets compound at 10%, with no new contributions and the previous FIRE Number unchanged.
Outran / Kept Pace / Trailed
Compares the current do-nothing clock with the 10% sit-and-wait path.
4% withdrawal rate / mo
Liquid Assets for FIRE × 4% ÷ 12. Shown next to average implied spend so you can see how much of today's lifestyle the pile already covers. The progress bar is assets ÷ FIRE number. It does not change Years to FIRE.
This is a tracker, not advice.
